The Sukkur College of Nursing and Midwifery (SCONAM) have been established in 2025 under the administrative and academic umbrella of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, with the aim of strengthening nursing and midwifery education in the northern region of Sindh. The college is situated at the premises of Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College (GMMMC), Sukkur, a well-established public sector medical institution that provides an appropriate academic and clinical learning environment.
Sukkur city serves as a major administrative, educational, and healthcare hub of upper Sindh, catering to a large population from Sukkur Division and surrounding districts. Its strategic location and developed transport connectivity make it an accessible center for higher education and healthcare services. The presence of tertiary-level healthcare facilities in the city offers valuable clinical exposure opportunities essential for nursing and midwifery education.
In addition to its healthcare significance, Sukkur holds notable historical and cultural importance. Landmarks such as the Lansdowne Bridge, Sadh Belo Temple, and the Indus River (Lab-e-Mehran) riverfront reflect the city?s longstanding historical relevance and social stability, further supporting its suitability for the establishment of higher education institutions. The establishment of SCONAM aligns with national and provincial priorities to expand access to quality nursing and midwifery education, particularly in underserved regions. The increasing demand for skilled and professionally competent nurses and midwives in public and private healthcare institutions necessitates the development of accredited nursing colleges capable of producing graduates who meet contemporary healthcare needs.
SCONAM is envisioned as a center of excellence in nursing and midwifery education, emphasizing quality education, clinical competence, ethical practice, research orientation, and community-based healthcare services. The academic, administrative, infrastructural, and clinical arrangements for the college have been planned in accordance with the standards and guidelines prescribed by the Sindh Higher Education Commission (Sindh HEC) and the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC). This feasibility report presents an overview of the proposed establishment of SCONAM and demonstrates the institutional readiness of SMBBMU to successfully initiate and sustain the college in compliance with regulatory requirements.
